Got a 77 Reinell 200 with a mercruiser 120 under the cover... If more info is needed ill do my best to find it out. Couple of issues though.
1. At high speeds i notice the boat leans left, Normal?
2. on the ignition coil, there was a brown wire connected to the ground side, preventing my engine from running. I am waiting on a manual to get here so i have some wiring diagrams and stuff, you all are all i got rite now sorry to bother you
3. hesitates on low throttle side of forward, once you get it goin she flies, just like a dead spot almost.

Re: Mercruiser Drive Questions

if your asking about inside the drive unit it self then yes absolutly there is a gear case in there and gears should never be run without an anti friction device(ie. gear lube)what your looking for is the quicksilver high performance gear lube. sorry i don't know what the normal substitution for this is. as far as how, first you drain it 2 flat head screws one near the top and one near the bottem of the unit undo the top then the bottem and let her drain for a while. now you need a pump for your gear lube (they will have the right one at the boat store)and pump the lube in from the bottem until i starts to run out the top and plug it back up.

the coil wire. what do you mean by blown? is it burnt? your hesitation sounds like the points may be bad. check your timing pulgs wires and points and check your condensor wire this could be the wire on the coil you speak of.

no sorry my fault, read too quick. those two brown wires are to a ground and the condensor in your coil and if they are preventing your engine from running you are not getting good ground, the wires are fried, or you have a bad condensor. should be an easy fix a tune up kit (points and condensor), a wire brush, and a little wire should fix you right up

Re: Mercruiser Drive Questions

wish someone would answer that "boat leaning left" issue. mine does this and i have to move folks around on the boat to offset this problem with weight.

i am assuming yours is like mine then DT, leans so far you are afraid you will capsize in a high speed left turn, even if you are barely turnin it?

I could probably help you guys fix that boat leaning left issue, if you have any glass experience.

Here are a few questions that need to be answered first. I assume that you have a right hand prop on the boat? Is the boat leaning in a turn or going straight?, if so does the boat lean sitting still (is it level with equal amount of weight port and starbord?)

Re: Mercruiser Drive Questions

Mine leans to the left when I'm going straight and seems to sit straight when noone is in the boat. One time it was doing it while towing a tube and when I turned left, it scared me to death as it seemed like we were straight up and down - on our side! I'm not too sure which way the prop turns since I'm pretty new to all of this. Like I said, it is usually solved by moving the wait around on the boat.

mine leans with throttle, the more i give it the more it leans, idle its fine. as for the prop, as i stand facing the rear of my boat it turns clockwise.

Re: Mercruiser Drive Questions

Does the steering seem normal or does it turn easier to the left then to the right?

Steers fine, has less play in the steering wheel than my 01 Ram

Re: Mercruiser Drive Questions

as for the impeller question no lube is needed, but if your installing a new one some people recomend to hit it with a tiny bit of a lube (a tiny shot with white lithium grease smeared around the inside of the impeller housing will do) just so it dosen't spin dry for the first time but other than that there's no gear lube or anything like that.
