I can't find my engine serial # range anywhere - assuming I actually am using a proper #. I read the # off a small blue tag on/near the carburatior. I hope it's for the engine but it could be the carb ID Here's what it says.....

5,7L 5.7 INB 1347-9662

Any help? What does "INB" mean?

edit.....never mind, saw this is the Carb ID#. I'll keep looking.

It is stamped on the starboard side, just above the starter, and again on the starboard side, on the front just below the cylinder head near the gas/water separater. Both spots are a PITA to find and read. There is a diagram someone in an old thread showing the exact locations. Good luck. HY

Well, I've looked everywhere (except whereever it is, if it's there). Maybe I'll take off the gas/water seperater tomorrow and check there.

Re: Mercruiser engine cross reference please

OK. Thanks so much for the very specific location info. I had look in those areas for a long time - I never did find it.....but my son, who isn't old and falling apart, was able to find the S/N plate! Finally. here's what it says.

Serial No. C670724

Mercury Marine, Div. of Brunswick

So I assume that is the correct s/N. I still don't see that number in the ranges on the charts i looked at.....seems like most have 8 digits, not seven.

don? Anyone? Thx.

Re: Mercruiser engine cross reference please

OK, thanks.....putting the "O" before the S/N my son read makes it "work" in the reference page I found online. It gives ranges for various engines and mine looks to be in the 1987-1992 range. Assuming sequential numbering (I have no idea if this is how they did it) I'd put mine around 1990 I guess. I THINK it''s a 350 Mag Alpha but not sure as the ranges cover a few models.

Any way to be more specific?

more specific than what?
true, even though some things can be referenced by years
Mercruiser does not do model years.

Re: Mercruiser engine cross reference please

OK, I've got it, thanks all. Mine is the 350 Mag Alpha and it's a 4-bbl. That's what I need to know for any parts/service needs.

Sounds like actual model year isn't specifically determined by S/N but I see the range and figure "around 1990". t doesn't really matter much I guess, just a curiosity.

That's because there's no such thing as model year as far as Merc is concerned....
Boggeling... isn't it :)
