Ok here we go I have a 1988 Mercruiser 5.0 and here in lies the problem. I can idle this motor all day long no problems. But when I go to put some power on at about 2600 rpm the motor falters and stalls out. It is then very hard to start also I seems to be overheating the rizers are hot to the touch. If i pump the throtle it will start but not run long. The motor has new rizers and manifolds new carb and new fuel pump all water seperators are new I am at my wits end need some sugestions. It also has a new impeller and a new waterpump on the out drive

it could be choking it self.
I'd do a carb adjustment before anything.

I have somewhat of the same problem. My boat is not over heating but runs good until about 4200 RPMS and then it acts like it is not getting fuel.
I just bought the boat 2 months ago and the previous owner said he had the carb rebuilt??????

Could be running lean, that would cause engine to overheat. You cant adjust the carburetor to change fuel mixture. You might have one jet clogged.

You need to check the fuel filter (and probably replace it) for starters. And check any other devices connected to the fuel line to see if they are clogged up and hampering fuel flow. If that doesn't do it you should check the fuel pump and see if there is a small micro-filter where the fuel tank line meets the pump. I've had an experience with that and it sounds exactly like what you are experiencing. That tiny filter will collect debri, clog up, and shut down the fuel flow until you back off the gas or shut down. Then the pressure in the lines will kick back, clearing that micro filter.
When you start back up the debri will start clogging that tiny filter all over again.
Good luck.....

Barudan, In addition to the fine advice given here, I think you need to check out why your risers are hot to the touch! Risers are the first cooling system component to wear (actually rust)out, but if yours are new, you probably have poor water circulation or volume. Do your risers have their own cooling water hose? If so check the flow. If not, then water needs to go through the manifold, past the gasket and into the riser. You can pull the plug on the riser and check the water flow.

check for fuel restriction or stopped up carb. You are discribing lean engine due to lack of fuel. You should do a fuel flow test to verify you system is getting enough fuel to the carb. One person just took a bottle and connected a line to it and help it above the carb and gravity feed fuel to his to verify a fuel problem. He found a filter or strainer at the fuel tank causing the problem.
