Mercruiser gear oil leak

My friend just bought a 1994 Sea Ray that has a 5.0L V8 Mercruiser with an Alpha drive. The manual number appears to be: 90-821052940. I can't find the boatfix manual index for this particular model, link would be great!

On to the question, before he took it out the first time, he noticed that when the drive was in the up position he had a very slow leak of gear oil; the fill tank was full and then a couple months later it was nearly empty. We noticed some drive oil coming from the front of the drive (facing the transom), but could not tell where it was coming from for sure. Any thoughts of where to look? He is going to take it to a mechanic that I have used in the past to look at it and give a full tune up. Just wondering what/if there is anything we can look at in the mean time, hence the manual. Thanks!

Re: Mercruiser gear oil leak

You need to drain the drive & pressure test it.....
If it is dripping from the small hole in the bow/starboard side of the drive, it is most likely the shift shaft seal.....
You should pull the drive & inspect the ujoints & check the u joint bellows for signs of gear lube as well.....;)
