Mercruiser ground stud, replace with ordinary bolt?

The ground stud on my flywheel housing got pretty badly corroded and I eventually broke it off. Does it have to be replaced with a specific Mercruiser "special ground stud" or would any bolt do? As long as I got a stainless steel bolt with some nuts and metal washers I'm not sure what would be different?

Stainless is fine.

a regular steel bolt is also fine.that stud is used to connect the battery ground.

Thanks guys, and yes it also looks like I need one on the other side of the flywheel housing for the wiring harness.

BT Doctur I boat in saltwater and the previous bolt was very rusted (came like that so no idea on maintenance etc) so I'll go stainless and look after it. l

yep, they all get like that .I`m guessing there is no channel or a very small channel to direct water away from the engine with the engine box down.

You're right there is nothing there which seemed like a flaw. I've eyed up a small piece of aluminium to make a gutter between the cap and engine box and hopefully the water will go straight to the bilge rather than run over the engine.

napa carries ground stud bolts.

stainless has no carbon in it, therefore no strength.

electrical varnish will seal the connection and prevent corrosion once you get it sorted out.
