I just purchased this boat with a 1993 Mercruiser I/O 4.3L alpha one CID 262. Once the motor is started it runs great. If the motor sits for more then a week it will not start without putting gas in the carburator  . A week after I purchased the boat the seller came over and gave me a spring and ball bearing. He said they cleaned the gas tank and these parts were left over. Does anyone have a clue as to where these parts go? I believe this would fix my starting problem. :) Thanks to anyone who can solve this problem for me.

Those are probably from the fuel line check valve that is screwed into your gas tank. You also may want to look down the messages for a message titled "Weber carb on 4.3LX" for some more information on that motor.

Mark

Do you pump the throttle lever a few times? That would put gas in the carb.

Yes, I do pump the throttle lever three or four times before starting. It does not seem to help. I am currently in the Navy and on duty so I will not be able to check what GMT said about the spring and ball bearing in the gas tank until tomorrow morning. If replacing these parts in the correct spot does not fix it, I will try some of the other suggestions people give me. Again Thanks!!

One more question I have. Which way does the spring and ball bearing go into the check valve?

The fuel line check valve, is usually an aluminum or brass hose barb fitting that connects the fuel line to the gas tank. They are about $10 at any marina or boat store. Take your airfilter off and have someone watch your carb when you pump the throttle, you should see gas "squirting" into the carb with each pump, if not your accelertor pump is in need of some repair. Do you have a 2 or 4 barrel carb?

I wanted to thank everybody for the help. I replaced the spring and ball bearing and took it out on Sunday it started right up and ran outstanding. Thanks again.
