Hi Everyone,
I am new to this forum and to boat owner ship as well. I am looking forward to this new experience and am learning a lot very quickly. In researching my issues with the boat I found this forum and see that it is has so much good information and reference material. Hopefully as I gain some knowledge I can provide some assistance to someone someday.
As I mentioned I am new to boat ownership but do have experience with automotive mechanicals. I did obtain the factory shop manual for the motor which helps a lot in understanding its operation. I have found several areas to investigate and perhaps someone who has seen these issues and can point me to the most likely scenarios to resolve the issues I am having.
Here is some background info:
Last fall I purchased a 2005 Rinker Captiva with a Mercruiser 5.0l MPI stern drive. The previous owner worked with me to winterize and store the boat. Upon launching it last week, it starts fine and runs great at WOT however 2 things are occurring, on initial start up it idles around 700 RPM but once its shifted into gear the idle never goes back to 700 RPM it will always idle around 1000 RPM. The other issue is when in the water about 90% of the time if you shift into neutral it will stall. It does start right back up though.
Between the higher idle and stalling it becomes quite a chore trying to dock the boat.
So far I have only checked the throttle cable and lubricated it, as I thought maybe something was sticking not allowing it to fully return to idle speed. I have not addressed anything yet with regard to the stalling.
Some things I found that possibly are causing the issues:
According to the shop manual, it looks like in adjusting/installing the throttle cable a small amount of preload is put onto it which maybe helps the motor return to low idle when in neutral. Maybe that needs some adjusting so that it will return to 700 RPM consistently.
Regarding the stalling I see 2 things to look at, the IAC Valve (Idle Air Control) and the Neutral Cut Out Switch which briefly cuts the motor when shifting into neutral to unload the gear box.
Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide.
