Mercruiser Ignition Interrupter

After having encountered the OMC ignition interrupter to aid in shifting ...<br /><br />I was wondering if the old 260 Mercruisers had something similar to that? I don't remember such a thing on some I owned years ago. Seems like my old '79 260 Mercruiser shifted smoother than this 1988 OMC Cobra Four Winns I/O I am refurbing...or is it just me, been a long time.<br /><br />This unit is working properly, I believe, just kinda clunky..if you know what I mean. I am assuming they all are clunky to some extent (OMC's 1988 Cobras that is)..correct?<br /><br />Thanks ...Stan

Mercruiser has had shift interrupters on the 1967 120's I had 37 years ago.

Merc has used the shift interruper switches for ever, at least it seems that way. OMC (Other Marine Company) used the convoluted ESA (Electronic Shift Assist) that did basically the same thing, except instead of disrupting all ignition for a split second like Mercruiser did, they found a way to make a black box and only stop half the cylinders for a split second. It also involved making the adjustment procedure so precise that it was almost impossible to get it right unless you spent a great amount of time to become a guru at it. If you were wrong in the adjustment, you will spend much of your income replacing gears and bearings. Since OMC hasn't been in the outdrive buisness for many years now, finding people and parts to do the work properly is becoming a bit of a problem.<br />Below is some information on Cobra drives you might find interesting.........especially since you now own one <br />Anyways, here ya go.<br /> OMC Cobra Tech Info <br /><br />Good Luck
