mercruiser ignition

I have a 1986 230 HP Mercruiser I/O that had ignition problems. I installed a high performance automotive distributor that works fine except it is hard to shift from forward to neutral or reverse to neutral. I think there must be a switch in the shifter that briefly kills the ignition on the original set up. Does anyone know how to make this work with my GM distributor?
The dist. is a stock style GM with one 12 volt wire to the coil.

Re: mercruiser ignition

you really should not be useing a non marine rated distributor there are a lot of saftey issues with auto parts causeing gas fumes to explode vs marine rated parts

and auto parts can usally not handle a damp engine bay very long

the shift switch should be mounted on the motor as part ofthe gear shift cables

tommays
