Mercruiser in a Volvo Penta?

Hi All,
Need a bit of advice please,
I have a shot 97 Volvo penta 5.7gs engine in the boat, hole in piston amongst other issues (bought replacement engine in good faith, turns out to be a lemon). i cant find a good replacement apart from a long block, but this means loads of work stripping and transfering tinware etc etc....
I have found a 05 Mercruiser 5.7 turn key bobtail engine with warranty, looks almost new and is 25% cheaper than the long block option and without all the stripping.
Is the Mercruiser bell housing , front mounts and drive joint the same as the volvo?
My other point i have noticed is the mercruiser has a serpentine belt and the alternator is just above where the sea water pump on the volvo normally is, has anyone fitted a seawater pump to this engine?
I would really appreciate your feedback on this one, the boating season is getting closer and i am high and dry!!;)

Many Thanks.

Front mounts are the same, bellhousing is way different, but your old one will work, along with the coupler if they are of different lengths. Exhaust is different and may not line up with your Y pipe.

Bravo engines have an engine mounted raw water pump. Or you could get the new style Volvo pump and bracket that is already designed for use on a motor with serpentine belt.

One like this. Seawater Pump And Hoses 5.7Gi-F, 5.7GXi-G - 7744840 - Volvo Penta

Thanks Don,
I have my original good condition manifolds and i guess they will fit, will my round loom power plug fit into the mercruiser socket? i also wount need the shift interuptor conrtol, should i just seal up the wires to the switch?
Oh and the trim pump and leg sensor wires hook up to my volvo loom, do mercruiser use the same design.
Sorry for all the questions.
Many Thanks
Damian.

Ayuh,... It'll be Far easier to redress a long block, than adaptin' another manufactuer's motor to another manufacturer's drive...

A long block is a Plug, 'n Play, where's what yer proposin' will be 1 "Gotchca" after another....

I think you're confusing a long block with a drop in. Along block is just the block and heads, and maybe some covers.

Re: Mercruiser in a Volvo Penta?

I don't know what model year your getting, what the wiring harness is or anything else. If it has the 10 pin round plug, then yes it will plug into the Volvo harness. Shift interrupt, well, that depends on the ignition system you will have. I would assume the Thunderbolt V, but not saying for sure because I don't know.
I wouldn't pull the manifolds off the first thing, if they do line up with the Y pipe OK, they are probably the dry joint style manifolds and are way better than Volvos manifold, which are like Mercruiser old design.
Trim pump for the Volvo drive shouldn't be a problem. Engine wiring has nothing to do with the trim sender, so not a problem.

Linkage for the carb will probably take an adapter kit for the cable end to hook to the linkage, but the controls go the right direction.

Nope,... No I'm not,.... Read ALL of my post...

He's got a fully dressed blown Volvo, 'n is lookin' at droppin' in a Fully Dressed Mecruiser...

Thanks for this Don,
I know it is easyer to just use my ancillaries, but it would mead changing everything including the loom, as this engine is 2005 with 0 hours i would prefer to use the 'new' system and with a little tinkering here and there, and i thank you all for your help in this.

if i just disconnect the wires to the interuptor switch and blank them off, i am guessing that will work ok?

Re: Mercruiser in a Volvo Penta?

You would disconnect the two wires on the interrupt switch and hook them together on the harness side to complete the circuit, not just tape them off.
Not sure about the manifold, don't remember what year they came out, but if they are dry joint.
The other thing, the Merc exhaust elbows have things bolted to them, a lot different than the Volvo, You will be making some brackets. either way you go.
