Anyone know if the Mercruiser MPI motors use the standard J1939 database and diagnostic messages? If they don't and use all proprietry messages, anyone have a database or a list of the main messages? Anyone know the baud rate?

I'd like to hook up my CAN buss development tool to the boat and see what the PCM thinks is wrong, or just look at all the data on the buss for what sensor is intermittent and out of range.

I know they make special tools for this, but I rather use mine if at all possible (CANalyzer by Vector). This is a long shot, but I thought I would ask.

Re: Mercruiser J1939 database

Well, the hardware is Bosch 2.0 CAN, which is what J1939 is based off of...but, it looks like it's Smartcraft, which is a spin off of NMEA2000, which was a spin off of J1939 (the SAE protocol). Long story short, my J1939 database was useless. I can see the traffic and the messages, but I can't decode the message IDs or scale the data. GMLAN and Audi all have the same proprietary messaging instead of the standard messages...I think to keep people from reverse engineering the calibrations in the engine and keep people making money on service. Given enough time you can decode it all by pulling one sensor at a time and making sure to only manipulate that sensor.

If I get a database or message list, I let everyone know. I was hoping mercruiser wasn't so cryptic:(
