I have a 1977 starcraft with a 140 mercruiser, I am leaking water in back of the boat somewhere, not a fast leak but it is a leak. i can see up in the drive, that the drive shaft boot is torn in 2 would this make it leak in the boat? if so would it have to go thru the gimble to enter the boat? the other boots under there look to be ok,I am also having trouble with my tilt and trim, the pump runs but the unit does not move, what kind and how much oil is in there , can any one help me? thanks

I'm not an expert here, but if you can see a torn boot, STOP! get it fixed immediately. Replace all of them. Some damage may have already been done.

If you get water in that drive, your asking for a whole wallet of trouble, to say the least it could sink your ride! There's nothing stopping that water from coming right on through into your bilge.

This happened to a friend of mine. he had his boat moored and had a split boot. His batteries ran dry with the auto bilge going off and sunk it. He went up to check on it, and found just the tip of the boat out of the water! OOPS!

I don't know which pump yu have for trim, but it sounds like 'yer low on oil. This happened to my 2001 Mercruiser. One of my trim hoses came loose and leaked all the oil out.
Thanks to the guys on this forum for helping me refill and purge the system.

I was told by my dealer that I needed CLEAR power steering fluid. I used a Napa brand. Check your book, cause yours might be different. What color is the oil?

H.

Look on the side of the pump resevoir and it should say what kind of oil. Mine is a 74 mercruiser type 1 and uses #20 oil. I strongly suggest that you flush the pump and lines with new oil. Following that you will have to bleed the lines. Your manual should guide you through that. If you don't have a manual yet...get one, its well worth it. Check wall mart automotive section for a Seloc manual if you have trouble finding a manual. E bay has them for sale as well.
