Replace the retainer ring. Those tabs not only make it easy to remove and replace, they are also there to hold that big rubber ring in place when you put the drive on. If it gets pushed in by the broken tab, it WILL let water into the bellows.

The rubber ring is just glued in, the metal ring is pushed in. The retainer ring with the tabs (that I assume you broke) is screwed in.

Go up to the adults only sticky and download the OEM service manual for your drive. #14 is the one you want.

Thanks, The retainer is screwed in I assumed cw to remove this would be ccw, do I have to buy the "special tool " to remove it or can use very large channel lock pliers that I have, also do I need the special sealer or is there something else to use. Thank you so much for for guidance with this!

Re: mercruiser outdrive

you need to get s/m #14 and go look at the disassembly and reassembly procedures.

that nut gets 200 ft. lbs. i think ya should use the proper tool.. the proper tool is also used to service the driven gear assembly as a stand.

read the instructions carefully. while i've not been where your going on a genII, i did on my 1 drive. it's not straight fwd and ya'll need some mechanical skills and some tools.

yep, like normal fasteners, ccw to remove the nut...

Re: mercruiser outdrive

I purchased the special (retainer) wrench on Ebay for about $25. My first attempt at loosening the u-joint retainer was with a cheater bar attached to the retainer wrench. Didn't work so well. Found it much easier to lightly tap the retainer wrench with a hammer. U-joint retainer loosened up with minimal effort. Retainer wrench a must for reassembly if you want to torque to required specs.

I was about to post a question on the purpose of the rubber gasket that backs up against the rear of the u-joint bellows. Now I know. Thanks Don S:)
