Mercruiser power assist steering

I have a Mercruiser 454 stern drive with "Power Assisted Steering" on a 25ft Pursuit. The problem I have is that I want to put a 4 stroke trolling motor on it with a rod hooking it to the outdrive but you can't steer unless the engine is running. Has anyone ever replaced this with a regular hydraulic steering system?

Ayuh,... It's reasonably easily done... Go for it...

Even without the power assist you should still be able to turn the steering wheel .
May want to inspect your complete steering system for binding.

As the Doc said, you should be able to steer without the engine running.
