I recently bought a 1989 Wellcraft 230 with a Mercruiser 5.7 260 Hp I/O.
The aluminum prop that came with the boat was really beat. It was 14 x 19.
I decided to replace it with a stainless Quicksilver prop. The new stainless
prop is 14.5 x 19. It fits just fine, but the engine RPM at wot should be
between 4200 and 4600, and mine will only produce 4000 rpm. The Merc
dealer tells me that this is what Merc is offering now, and it shouldn't make
a difference. Is this so ? Is the prop too big, or am I within acceptable
limits ? The engine runs fine with this prop and cruises nicely at about 3200
rpm, but does seem to take a bit too long to get on plane. Then again, I've
owned outboards in the past and maybe I'm just used to the high torque that
they produce out of the hole.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....
