Hello,

I know this issue has been brought up before (both by myself and other members), but I have a slightly different question. I just got new exhaust manifolds and risers for my 1986 Merc 260/Alpha One. I went out and bought a set of Mercruiser gaskets because I was told on this site to use them instead of the Sierra gaskets. I then found out I got a free set of Sierra gaskets with my manifold purchase, and I compared the 2 and it seems like the Sierra gaskets are much more stiff and sturdy than the Merc gaskets. Both appear to be stamped from gasket paper but the Sierra's are thicker. Everyone on this site seems very adamant about using Merc gaskets, so my question is what makes them so much better?

Genuine Mercruiser riser gaskets are NOT paper.
What is the part number of the Merc gaskets you received?

Quicksilver Part # 27-863726. Did I get the wrong part?

EDIT: I haven't taken them out of the package yet. I assumed they are paper because they are pretty flimsy - they could be made of something else that is just as flimsy.

If they are a silver gray, they are the right ones. Flimsy is not a test of a gasket to work properly.
Besides, the problem with the paper gaskets was with the blockoff gaskets, not the one with 4 slots. The blockoff part was paper and would break through.

They are silver gray so I assume they are correct. Does it matter if I use the gaskets with 4 slots or the restricted gaskets? I think the restrictor gaskets were in there before (the ones with a small hole in the front and back instead of a slot).

Ayuh,... You need to use the Same style as was in it before...
Changin' 'em will cause Overheat problems...

The T-stat housing determines which 1s...

Re: Mercruiser Riser Gaskets

Thank you both Bondo and Don. I will go and exchange the riser gaskets for the correct ones listed on the service bulletin.
