Re: mercruiser run poorly when warm
ToddW
You have replaced most of your ignition system so if the symptoms have not changed I think unlikely to be ignition problem. Still do not see a couple of things in the posts.
1: Have you checked the voltage to the + side of the coil when you have the problem. It should be 9 or 10 volts. If it is lower you could have a bad or cracked balast resistor or bad resistance wire.
2: How did you set your points, should be .018 or .019 gap on top of the lobe. Dwell angle should be 31 to 34 degrees. Check it when you have the problem.
3: Make sure you have changed the coil to distributor high tension lead.
4: Check your ingition timing when it runing good an again when it fails.
5: Make sure have a ground wire to the points plate.

Fuel problems
1: I would start smiple, when failing remove your gas tank fill cap. If it takes off you have a blocked fuel tank vent line.
2: Hook up a fuel pressure guage and check it when it is failing, should have 3.5 to 6 psi of fuel pressure. Be carefull, no fuel leaks.
3: Carburetor float mighting be sticking not letting in enough fuel or not shuting off the fuel letting the bowl over flow.

Valves
Make sure valves have been adjusted when hot. Get every thing ready and when it is failing do a quick compression check on all cylinders. A stuck lifter or valve too tight and valve can stay open when hot.

If you have the tools hook up your dwell meter to the - side of the coil, a volt meter to the + side of the coil. Hook up a timing light and check timing when it is working good and again when it failing. Hook to the coil high tention line and see if have any missing sparks or check wire to each cylinder for missing pulses. Hook up fuel pressure guage and check pressure when it is failing. One of these things should lead you to your problem.

All engine needs to run is comperssion 130 psi, Fuel air mix, and a proper timed spark.
