I had the shift cable replaced on my late '70's Mercruiser 165, the one going to the outdrive. Yesterday I started it in my driveway on the muffs and tried to put it into gear. It went into reverse ok but made a clicking noise when put into forward. Does this mean the cable isn't adjusted properly? Does that clicking noise mean I damaged something because the gears weren't meshed all the way? I hope it's just an adjustment and I didn't damage anything!

Those noises mean very little when running on the muffs. There is no back load on the prop ,so therefore nothing to hold it against the gear dogs. Each time that engine do'es a little lope at idle you will hear a little rattle at the gearcase.

True, it's hard to tell if it is shifting properly when running on muffs. It does sound like your not getting completely into gear. Did the shop actually put the boat in the water( to provide the prop load) when making final shift adjustments? Remember the acuracy of the shift cable adjustment can make the difference in the life span of the gears/cluth dog.
