Mercruiser stalling at idle

4.3 carb'd Mercruiser, Alpha1, electric fuel pump.

Engine starts just fine, settles into a nice idle, then slowly...slowly...slowly...slowly the RPM's come down and it dies.
Cold, warm, in water, on trailer, whatever... no difference.
I can hold the RPM up in neutral, and same thing after about 15 seconds, RPM just slowly decays and it dies.

So, I got out the manual and suspected a clogged fuel filter at the carb. When I removed the fuel hard-line and unscrewed the larger nut to get at the filter... there wasn't one (sort of). What was in there instead of the washer/filter/spring was just a small piece of wadded up mesh filter element... no plastic filter housing or spring anywhere to be seen. So I removed the flame arrester and had a good look into the carb... nothing

With no debris in the carb, I put the line back on and fired it up thinking the wadded up mesh was the culprit... NOPE, still stalling. I'm a little worried where the pieces went if there were any, but I find it impossible that the large plastic filter body and the metal spring were simply absorbed by the engine. It's a mystery.

I'm certain it's a fuel issue. I understand that the oil-pressure sensor that controls the fuel pump after intitial ignition might be the problem. Perhaps a faulty pump? I am the second owner of about a month now and the boat was previously maintained to an obsessive level.

Any other thoughts.
