Mercruiser Starter Delay!?

I have a 1996 Chapparal 1830 with a 4.3l inboard (carbuerated) & Gen II outdrive. I have experienced the following several times of late and am hoping someone has some information. When turning the key to start the engine I get no cranking and the alarm changes its tone (gets less loud). When I stop & retry, the alarm is still low with no cranking. To relieve the problem I disconnected the battery cables thinking I needed to reset the system. The engine then starts.

Is their a protective time delay switch in the system that is tripping and could it be going bad?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Tight down all of your battery cables with a wrench and a nyloc nut. Not the wingnuts.

failing starter slave solenoid switch had the same problem last year, I thought it was the neutral safety switch.
