Mercruiser stern drive shifting into neutral?

I just bought a used 1994 Bayliner 20' Capri with a Chevy 350 and a mercruiser stern drive. It ran great while I was testing it out. Took it out for the second time yesterday, and at one point while we were cruising along it seems like it shifted into neutral by itself. The engine rpm's increased and the the boat slowly came to a halt. I quickly shifted it into the neutral position, then shifted into forward and we were on our way again. No hard clunking sounds. I was playing around with the trim button at the time, and thought that maybe I had bumped it into neutral accidentally. It did this again one more time, though, and I was not messing with the trim tab at that time. It drove great for the rest of the day after this. What could be causing this? I know nothing about the inner workings of the stern drive system.

I had the same problem. Wondering what the reply will be.

probably has nothing to do with the inner workings. you probably either trimmed to high and aerated the prop or the prop hub is spun. prop slipping on rubber between prop hub and shaft hub.
