I am new to this boating stuff. I have a 1976 Mercruiser inboard 140 HSP- 4 cylinder. I last took boat out and it ran fine and then when went to take out again the tilt/trim would not work properly. At first it had a clicking when moving up or down. Found a wire not connected very well so fixed it and then it SLOWLY worked with a whining sound. Going down worked slowly and going up for only a few seconds and then would stop. Motor would start smoking. Took forever to get it up or down then it stops all together.Took apart ,cleaned, checked brushes, motor seems to be working but pump seems to not be. No leaks anywhere. Not 100% about what to check or what the problem is.Figured I need a new pump but can't find them without buying the whole motor and can't find any at all for my older model. Can't get part# of it too faded to read.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and if it is the pump any recommendations on where to buy a rebuilding kit or another pump without paying an arm and leg for the new ones? Also have a problem when switching from forward gear to reverse.Clicking and does not want to switch.Any suggestions?
Thanks-

Re: Mercruiser tilt/trim problem

Ayuh,.... Well, The trim pump issue is Best addressed by replacing it with a Used, New Style Pump........ Ebay is a Great Resource....
You'll need to change a fitting or 2,+ get rid of the reverse lock down switch that's mounted up on your transom,.... Maybe a line or 2......

Your shifting Issue is No Doubt related to the Lower Shift Cable.......
It needs Adjusting Atleast,.... Replacement is More Likely.........
