I am new to this boating stuff. I have a 1976 Mercruiser inboard 140 HSP- 4 cylinder. I last took boat out and it ran fine and then when went to take out again the tilt/trim would not work properly. At first it had a clicking when moving up or down. Found a wire not connected very well so fixed it and then it SLOWLY worked with a whining sound. Going down was slow and going up for only a few seconds and then would stop. Motor would start smoking. Took forever to get it up or down then it stops all together.Took apart ,cleaned, checked brushes, motor seems to be working but pump seems to not be. No leaks anywhere full of fluid .Battery okay. Not 100% about what to check or what the problem is.Figured I need a new pump but can't find them without buying the whole motor and can't find any at all for my older model. Can't get part# off it too faded to read.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on what else to check and if it is the pump any recommendations on where to buy a rebuilding kit or another pump without paying an arm and leg for the new ones? <br />Thanks

Re: mercruiser tilt/trim

When I was having trouble with my outdrive pump, my mechanic told me not to waste time rebuilding it(the pump part), because it would never be the same. He told me how to clean it and it has worked great ever since.

Does your pump look similar to the one that tom pictured above? If so, pull the reservoir off, and clean it out (I used carb cleaner) I soaked my pump in a bowl of carb cleaner, let it dry and put it back together, filled it with clean oil, bled out all of the old oil and air. Works great now, be sure and keep your eye on the oil level in the reservoir, mine went down pretty quick while I was cracking those lines open. Good luck!
