My problem is with my trim/tilt for my mercruiser A1 stern drive. I was getting no response at all from lowering or raising but then I noticed a large black cable that was not attached. The cable comes from the battery and ends in a position that suggests it attaches to the transom area. I have bolted it down to the metal assuming its a ground but get no response from the unit. I attached it to a smaller bolt with two smaller black wires attached and the motor clicked when I attempted to lower. However the bolt and wires at the connection of the black cable became very hot.

The black cable may have been mis-marked, a positive line as opposed to a ground. Trace the cables other end to its origin. Where does it come from? It would not heat up if it were a ground wire.

maybe you can help me with my problem. I have the same drive and there are burned wires coming from the drive unit to the engine compartment. One of which is disconected. It is a thin black wire with a purple band. Does your drive have the same wires and if so where are they connected?

Re: mercruiser trim wiring problem

The cable is coming off of the battery. There are two red and two black cables coming from the battery. The first set go to the engine for starting. The other set has the red going to the transom assembly at the hydraulic unit but the black cable was loose. I assume it should ground somewhere. I attached it at a location where two other black wires are attached including the black wire coming out of the hydraulic pump unit.

For papapalapa: I see the four wires coming in from the drive unit. One set goes to the terminal screw connections just under the circuit reset button and the other set goes through the seat towards the front possibly the isntrument panel. One may have purple on it, its faded. At any rate, before going through to the front they connect to other wires. One attaches to a purple wire with a white line and the one I believe is your wire is connected to two (2) white wires coming from the front. Do you see anything like that laying loose?
