Ok, my upper unit bearings and gears are shot. My local repair guy says it will cost around $1200 to replace those parts. I see units for sale on ebay with 1.50 gears for alot less but I'm wondering about compatibilty? My current setup is a type "R" upper with an Alpha I lower. The boat is a 74' searay 190. Will any year upper work with my current gimble housing?

Thanks,

Jay.

Re: mercruiser upper unit questions

Why not buy a complete R or MR leg and sell the current alpha lower you already have, then you would have a complete new unit...but to answer your question either a alpha1 without XD t/t rams or R or MR upper will work but not alpha1 genII... I would think a Alpha1 gen1 would be most common to find... you already have the lower but if the new upper is fitted for the XD tilt/trim rams then it may be a issue mating to the Gimble housing on your current R, maybe Rodbolt or Bondo can verify, I just seem to remember there was a difference but can't recall the details.

The Alpha 1 is a Bolt-Up Swap........
As Long as you use the Mod.1(R-drive) In-Put Shaft.......
It's about an Inch Shorter......

You Could buy 1 of these Aftermarket drives from iboats, for about $1500.
Then Sell Your Lower unit for $500.,on ebay.....
