Hello all,
I’m a long time lurker, first time poster on here. I usually am king of the search button, and the information given by y’all has been extremely helpful over the years. And for that, I say thank you.

Well the time has come for me to ask a simple question that I can’t find the answer for. I’m looking to replace a 5.0L EFI Mercruiser (2001 vintage) in my Chaparral 220 SSi bow rider, with a 5.7L Vortec longblock that was supposedly built in 2006. Found a fellow with a pair of 5.7L Vortec longblocks in good shape, but one is a LH rotation, and the other is a RH rotation. I know for my standard Alpha One, Gen2 I/O setup, I need a standard LH rotation.

But my question is this, is there a quick way to identify which engine is which (LH or RH), externally? There are no fly wheels to check wear patterns on, the distributors are gone, as are the intake manifolds. They do have the crankshaft dampers still installed, and cams are still installed. Basically, bare longblocks. Are the crank dampers the same? Or will I be looking at the camshaft when rotating one over to watch what lifters move up and down per the two different firing orders? By the way, there are no tags remaining on these engines.

Just want to make sure I pick up the correct one.

Thanks a bunch!
Kevin

There hasnt been a ccw (rh) motor for the past 45 years. Your 2001 motor is the same long block used in trucks

Since the early 80s, the CW or CCW prop direction has been done in the drives

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,......

For the reasons Scott stated, It's extremely Unlikely a vortec block is a right-handed motor,.....

LH engines have timing chains, RH have timing gears.

If you can turn the engine, if the cam turns the opposite direction to the crank, it's RH; same direction, it's LH.

Awesome, thank you guys.

Confirmed that these are both standard rotation engines, and the boat they came out of reversed the direction of the prop on one side via the gearbox, like y'all said. Life is good.

With a twin engine install one drive rotates CW and the other rotates CCW, but both motors rotate CW (LH). Its all being done inside the outdrive
