Chevy 3.0 L 130 hp, Mercruiser I/O 1989

Wellcraft boat

Im looking at a boat right now and don't know much about I/O. The problem is that the guy says the last time he took the boat out that it over heated. I have the boat at home and found out that that water pump is broken beacause all of the pices are in the botom of the lower unit. I also found out that the exhaust that comes out of the mototr which is then connected by a rubber pipe to another pipe was on fire. Im wondering if the engine would have been damaged more. He said he only ran it for about 6 or 7 mins before he saw the smoke. But if it melted the pipe that means the motor would of gotten really hot. Im wondering if it could have done more serious damage and how much it costs for a new water pump and hose to be instaled???? any comments would be apriciated... Thanks... Bec

Motor may be ok but I would check the exhaust manifold and pressure/vac check the drive

Bec, Look here on some overheating causes:
http://www.marinemechanic.com/site/page85.html
When water is not present in the exhaust passages they become very hot even before actual overheat occurs.I agree with Merc get the entire drive and cooling system checked out.
