We have a 1978 Cruiser that has the 260 (350 Chevy) with the serial # 5079900. Where could I get the wiring diagram for this motor/boat?

Also, when the ignition is on and the points are closed, there's a heavy red wire from the battery to the solenoid behind the motor that has a doubled up white wire wrapped together...the white wire heats up. In the book it's called a resister wire. What's it's purpose and should it heat up like that? We're having problems with inconsistent spark at the points and while we're testing, it heats up. Good or bad?

Sorry, I posted this in the wrong catagory. I changed it to Mercruiser.

Re: Mercruiser Wiring Diagram

Don S. over on the Mercruiser I/O forum can steer you to the engine schematic. A restance wire is inserted into the ignition system to prevent the coil from receiving a full 12V under normal operation. This reduces stress on the coil and points. During starting (cranking) the resistor is bypassed to allow full 12V to the coil for starting. It would be warm with the key on and the points closed. Wiring for the engine is what Don S. can steer you to. Wiring for the boat itself (instruments and other boat related stuff) you are probably out of luck. Not many manufacturers publish those diagrams.
