Hello. First post. Searched but couldn’t find a post regarding my exact situation. I have an 89 Maxum 2000 stern drive. Previous owner swapped in a mercruiser 5.0. Anyways. I have only owned this boat for this season. It has been working well with the exception of an exhaust leak which I fixed. I also readjusted the shift cables when I did the exhaust leak as I had to remove them anyways. I had been running fine since. This last weekend I took it out and all was well until on my way back to the boat launch. I took off and just as it was coming to plane it fell on its face. It was barely moving and I limped it back to the ramp. When i hit the accelerator I saw the carb butterfly move and it would rev just fine but the prop would not spin any faster. But the prop was spinning. As if I lost almost all gears. Reverse worked as well but again only just barely. Any ideas? Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

Most likely the engine coupler went out or the prop hub, my guess is the coupler.

Coupler is mounted to the flywheel and the drive shaft goes into it. Every year the drive should be removed and alignment checked. If alignment is misaligned then it will burn out the coupler.

Did you smell any thing like burnt rubber?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... Or the vertical shaft snapped, at the o-ring near the top,.....

Did it overheat on the way to the launch,..??

If not, it's probably the prop hub is spun,.....
