My 83' Mercruiser 350 overheated and melted the flappers and pushed them to the outdrive my Question is Is there any metal parts possibly still in the y pipe or housing that i couldnt see when i removed my lower unit and found the plastic part cooked and wrapped arouned the shift shaft?

Just the pivot pin in the exhaust pipe.Pull the exhaust hoses and see if the pins are there along with the 4 bushings.Find as much of the flapper that you can to avoid an exhaust blockage.

the pins usually stay in the exhaust tube. the exhaust flapper is actually a metal plate coated in rubber. what you found was the melted rubber the metal plates are still in there. they usually get caught in the bell housing or just before. i've actually had them cause shift problems because they became wedged in the exhaust where the shift shaft passes through

I've had one case ,on a 4.3 where that remaining assembly settled in the bottom of the y pipe and wore a hole in it ,almost sinking the boat. Not something I've seen before or likely again but a heads up .It can happen.Get it all outta there.
