Mercruser Alpha One Gen II Shift Problem

When I run my boat and I try to put it in neutral it stays in forward or goes into reverse, I have problems putting it into neutral and sometimes the shifter gets stuck.

Could be:

Cables
Control Box
Shift interrupter
Internal (maybe detent)

Unhook the short shift cable the one that goes to the drive. Run engine (muffs)
try shifting by hand. Push is Rev. Pull is Fwd. If stiff you may have a bad short shift cable. If this is smooth, check control box and long cable for action while short cable is unhooked.
