New to the forum and need a bit of help. So I have a 1997 Stingray with a Mercruiser 3.0l, the original engine blew up middle of last season. So I replaced it with a 1988 3.0l for a quick turn around but I kept my newer ignition system (coil and distributor). The motor ran but not great bogged down at higher rpms and didn’t have an get up and go. I got into a car accident and she was put on the back burner until now. I first cleaned the carb and adjusted the timing only to find the fuel pump was not pumping fuel but I could siphon it from the tank. After I replaced the fuel pump, fuel line and filters all was well. Managed to get her to fire up but took a bit. Then I couldnt get her to fire again. she was flooding out, the carb was POURING gas in so rebuilt the carb and correctly set the float. Now I can’t get her to start, she’ll crank but only to back fire outta the exhaust. I reset the timing again even replaced the distributor cap and still nothing. The battery is on its way out but it’s on a charger. And yes all the plug wires are on correctly I checked that about 15 times. What am I over looking here? I plan on checking for spark on all cylinders and see if the coil is on the way out.

The 97 motor timing is 8 BTDC, the 88 motor is 4 BTDC. If you where running the 88 at 8 BTDC then might have done some damage.

You sure your gas has not gone bad?
Can you put a small amount of fresh gas down the throat of the carb to see if it will hit?
Check compression and if good, then use a spark gap tester to see if your getting white or blue spark

The side of the block said timing was 6 BTDC so that’s what it was set to.

And I tired dumping a bit of gas down the carb and I still get nothing. Back fire is just greater. I believe it’s a timing issue and maybe a weak spark. Going to check that today

Just go it to fire up, changed the battery, pulled the plugs and cleaned them up and reset timing to 4 BTDC. And she fired on the first crank. Thanks for the input AllDodge really appreciate it
