After putting a whole lot of work into my 5.7 Mercruiser Alpha1 Gen 2, I cannot start the engine.
I put a new oil pan on, starter, heatrisers, shiftcable, all bellows. Started on first try after re-installing the engine and drive.
Took her her out on the water a week later, started on the first tap of the key with no effort at all. Stalled.
Gas was pouring into the carb as though a gas nozzle was filling the tank.
OK...need carb rebuild. Did that. Started.
Back in the water the next day. Won't start.
Check spark. All cylinders have spark. Timing is 6* of TDC. Rotor is landing on each cylinder. Added new plugs. Checked timing chain.
And doing things bass akwards, checked compression last.
Lowest cylinder has reading of 55lbs, highest has 90lbs. Not good.
Also hearing a clunking noise as engine tries to turn over. Checked everything.
Is it time to use this engine as an anchor, or am I overlooking something?
This engine sat for a year. Needed an oil pan. Before I pulled the engine this spring, I pulled the dipstick, and it seemed as there was no oil in the engine.
I know the previous owner, and he was meticulous with maintainence.
Engine spins slowly, even with fresh batteries, and this clunking noise concerns me. I'm trying to figure out how this engine purred like a kitten one day, was totally shot the next.
It also sounds like engine is trying to suck air in somewhere. Almost makes a noise like a kazoo after it cranks. And after putting in new hotter spark plugs, plugs are dry as a bone. Only cyl 2, and 4 have gas. And this was after pouring gas down the carb.
How is it, that fuel is not finding it's way from the carb to the cylinders?
By time I get this figured out, I'll be shoveling snow!
