Tried cable adj.messed up foward so I put it back. the problem started all at once, no warning. just what is a shif clutch? and should I try to fix it myself? Thanks for the advice
irishwake
Your clutch dog is worn down. They tend to round off, causing the gears to not engage. You would need a Manual and have to take the lower unit off. Disassembly is required to do the job. Parts can be had online or at the dealer. You could do this job if you had the Manual.

Did you check the Lower Unit fluid for Metal in it?
there's also a few special tools required to
dissasemble the lower unit... easy job if'n
you have the tools IMO. local wrench shouldn't
charge very much to do and the part is cheap.
good luck,
M.Y.
P.S. did you completely disconnect cable and try
to shift manually? (rule out cable)
this is a job best left to a well equipped shop and trained tech. if repair is not done correctly yuo could ruin gear housing, not to mention tools required to do the job RIGHT the first time.sorry for the bad news.
