I am looking at a 97 bayliner capri to buy. the problem is that out of the 4 cylinders two are fine, one has no compression and one has high compression. im wondering if this is a easy problem to fix, about how much it may run to get fixed and if bayliner as a boat is any good (this would be my first boat)

thanks :)

Lynsea1,

Is this an outboard or Inboard/Outboard?

Either way, a dead cylinder is not cheap!

Pass.

Lynsea, Do some searches on Bayliner, You'll get alot of mixed reviews on the subject. What do you plan on doing w/ the boat. Will a 4 banger be enough for you?

More info needed..

- are you buying the boat as is with intentions of fixing it yourself? or are you planning on farming the job out to a local marine shop?

- If you are farming it out, you may want to have it checked by the marine shop prior to purchase, as they'll give you the most accurate estimate.

- If you are planning to fix it yourself, are you capable of handling whatever comes down the line?
Meaning you may have burnt or bent valves, blown head gasket or bad pistons.

- did you take a wet compression test on all cylinders? if not, do so to determine if it's piston rings, valves or ??? causing the compression loss.

- Squirt oil in each cylinder and check the compression over again.. and see if the compression comes up to mormal.

Sorry to have to ask you questions but a little more info from you would be helpful in order for myself and the others to help you out.

Take care,

Re: mercuiser engine cylinder out

Thank you for the replies. a 4 cylinder should be ok for me I am new to all of this. I would take the boat in to the shop to be repaired since I am not good with engines. I do have a friend who is very good he checked the compression, but it was not a wet compression test. Having it checked out is a good idea and i understand that maintenance on a boat is expensive and they need allot of care which i am willing to take care of. I was hoping my first boat would not give me too much trouble. The engine is a 3.0 4 cylinder mercruiser 135hp. I have done some research on bayliner reviews but actually could not find much any advice, ideas or suggestions would help i have made on offer on the boat just yet.

Thanks -L

Try This.....
Near the top of This Page is a Red "Seach" button.... Click on it,+ Type in bayliner....

There are Alot of Boats out there Besides a Bilgeliner.... This Sounds like a boat You Should Walk Away From....

I'd have to agree with Bondo... I'd walk away. Bayliner's are at best an entry level boat. Lots of "flash", but precious little "substance". This is from someone that owns one. From the construction standpoint they do enough to create the illusion of a quality boat, without it really being so.

Like putting a million dollar paint job on a Yugo.

Given that you have powerplant problems going in, and you can't do the work yourself, I'd pass. Just my personal opinion..

-Roger

Aside from the bayliner thing, even when you get the motor going you still have the outdrive your unsure of. I've seen many guys say A 4 cylinder is enough because its my first boat, than they'll be writing posts on Trim tabs, whale tails, new props, ignition changes, bigger carbs. Have an idea what you want to do w/ the boat first and spend the money now or she'll nickel and dime you forever.
