mercury 110 9.8 hp mid 70s. the problem is when you pull the shift lever forward the engine goes into reverse and goes forward when you push it back, neutral is okay. does anyone know why it would do this, working on motor for a friend and don`t know history , is it possible that the bottom end was not assembled properly. thanks for any help

Some of the older 7.5 and 9.8 motors were designed with the lever sitting horizontally for neutral. Pull up to go forward and push down to go back. The lever has probably been mounted incorrectly.

i don`t think that is the problem unless someone replaced the bottom end with one from an older engine, because the decal on the side of the cowl says back for reverse and forward for ahead and centre for neutral. any more thoughts on this problem? thanks again/

Over the years many things could have been replaced so there is no way to tell.. If the system works then dont be concerned about it.

I think you likely have a lower unit from 1970 and older which shifts backwards from 1971 and newer.

What is the part number on the lower unit? You need to drop the lower unit and look on the inside near the bolt hole in the rear.

The older backwards shifting lower unit part number is 1640 2643
The new shifting lower unit is 1640 4407 and up.
(I think these part numbers are correct)

Good luck !
