So I've got some questions. I've pulled out a 9.8 I just got back from my brother, did the impeller, cleaned the carb, and she now runs fine (good enough for me frok a 50 year old engine) BUUUUTTT before we took it out I opened the drain screw and nothing but water came out. So I filled it up and away we went. Ran it for an hour or so and drained it when we got home.

Milky. Also not much oil came out.
Put a pump on the drain and could hear it coming out inside. I'm going to putit in a tank and see where the bubbles come from but is it even possible to replace just the seals by the shift linkage or the driveshaft? Are they an off the shelf item I can source locally and cheap or am I stuck buying the whole seal kit from ebay?

Looking to just get back out with the kid quickly and dont want to keep buying unnecessary parts if I can avoid it. Thanks

Unsure how common these seals are. A lot of the OEMs, Merc included like to bundle seals/o-rings/gaskets/nuts/bolts/washers etc. in packs. It forces the dealer to bring in more inventory than needed. When Merc does this in their description they use @ signs to indicate how many come in a pack. A dealer may require you to buy the whole pack. That's why seal kits are popular. Not to mention nice to have if others seals are needed.
Also If you notice on the parts list #16 bushing assembly has #17, and 18 indented under it? That's how Merc indicates if you purchase the item the indented items are included. It's a little hard to follow but #28 comes wit everything through #33 and the seals are already installed in the housing.
I don't see a seal kit listed for your serial range.
#18 26-30696 seal @3
#30 26-30900T seal @2
#17 25-26802 o-ring @5
# 29 25-29439 o-ring @5
drain screw washers
prop shaft seals

Hmm, yeah thats confusing. Those are way better diagrams than I had found so far though. Maybe tomorrow I'll see if I can track down what's leaking exactly and see if I can size it between the actual part and those part lists. Thanks!

Kits are marketed by factory / ordered by dealers because they are a ----" shop time saver "----You don't need to pay your shop $120 / hr to look up part numbers do you ??

Might be best to do all of the seals on the lower unit, given the age of the engine. The seals are not all that expensive, available through any Mercury dealer or online parts source.

While you are at it, can you fix the seals on mine (Merc 7.5 hp ) ??? :D

Took a look today, looks like its definitely the seal around the shift linkage. Not sure if elsewhere too. Can't find info on changing that one, everyone seems to focus on the prop shaft. Is it simply hook it and slide off/on? Any tricks?

pretty much
A crochet hook or a hook from hook rug (remember those?? ) making work well.
The seal will be destroyed in removal 90% of the time.

Driveshaft, shift shaft, gaskets on the fill/drain screws are easy.
Always use a new one on the screws.

Prop shaft requires more work, and often a special tool, depending on the motor.

Okay, so one last one before I order the kit.

Oldmercs lists the kit as fitting a 1969 to 1985, while every other seller is see lists that kit being for 1975-1986 and shows no kits for older motors. So is it a safe bet that it is the correct kit? Thanks again
