I bought this motor used and the serial number plate is missing, but I would like to know about what year it is. The motor is black with a black top with a red band striped with black and white. It has a big tin piece that has merc 110 and kiekhaefer mercury on front of it that also striped in same color.

Look on the starboard side of the block for an aluminum disk , about 1" diameter. It looks liked a small freeze plug. The serial number is stamped on it.

I have a 1968 9.8hp 110 series mercury that fits your description extremely close except for the panel you were talking about on the front. Under the word Mercuy on the motor is there 2 silver stripes that run with the red line. That is the only thing different on mine. Damn good motor!!! Judging by your description, sounds just like mine.

I looked but couldn't find that disc anywhere on the block, the only thing I could find stamped into the block is the word lightning. Yes there are two silver stripes under the word mercury, one is a thin stripe and the other is a larger stripe that farther down. I going to take it to the shop today and get it checked out, because they gave me two days to see it I wanted to keep it or not.

Serial number is not freeze-plug stamped on older Mercs, rather it is actually stamped into the block itself. It'll be a 7-digit number, stamped into the upper rear of your motor block in about 8-point type...

I've got a few 1968-1969 red-band motors (4, 9.8, 20, 35 & 50hp) and I consider them to be solid runners - if you take care of them. A few things to look out for - leaky lower units, particularly at the upper driveshaft seal, located in the base of the waterpump housing. The driveshafts are carbon steel and will rust, particularly in this spot creating a rough sealing surface. There are fixes for this. I rather like model 110 - very quiet and lightweight...
- Scott
