Mercury 110 9.8hp gear question

I just changed the impeller on my Merc which was running great. When I put it back together though I have mixed up the gearing. I have put the gear shaft in several different ways now and still cannot get it to run with FWD NTRL and RVRS gears all working.
Is there a method to do this and get it right?
Any help would be appreciated..

I don't know if this is the right way to go about it, but it worked for me:

Remove the L/U.

Determine which gear the L/U gear case is in by turning prop

Put your gear shift lever in the position for that gear. (F, R, or N).

Re-install, it should work.

Thanks, and I did try that but it seems that when the gears mesh it ends up being wrong...I will try it again tonight starting in reverse until I can mesh it up....
