I recently purchased a 115 4 stroke engine for my boat. I have approximately 20 hours on the engine and it is "Making Oil" as mercury calls it. The engine is getting fuel in the oil.I know of three other people that are having the same problem. Mercury says that it is not a problem and that the rings are not seating. Their reaponse is to run the hXXl out of the engine at high rpm's. They have said for two months now that they are coming out with a 140 degree thermostat to "help" this problem.
I'm concerned with the gas in the crankcase causing premature wear on the engine parts, but again, I'm told that this will not hurt anything.I
have also been told that the yamaha 4 strokes are doing the same thing. Is anyone else having this problem?

Yes, TMans.

This seems to be common in new, Yamaha-built 4 stroke powerheads, 80 to 115hp.

The advice you got is what Yammy and Merc dealers are telling users.

I have heard of no other fix, but I'll bet both Merc and Yamaha are busting their butts to find one.

Good luck. :)

Re: Mercury 115 4 stroke

Here is the answer right from Mercury on this issue.

Some of the T-Stats are opening too soon and causing the engines to run cool...rather than the optimum operating temp.

The engines are getting too much fuel because of this...it is washing past the rings into the crankcase.

Anyone that suspects that this is happening is to remove the T-stat and test it. If it fails replace it with a new one.

TMD

Re: Mercury 115 4 stroke

I have the same engine, after 30 hrs use the engine became very noisy but only in neutral gear. When the gears were engaged the noise went away. The dealer changed the bottom end and the noise went away.....for another 20 hrs this time. Now the noise is back...a kind of a "whirrrring" noise it is. Anyone have this problem?

note, I have not had the gas oil problem...yet!
Gord

Well sorry, but I thought we were talking about a specific motor (the 115 Merc 4 stroke) and problems with it.

We were talking about TMans' problem with his engine, Gord.

Your different problem is with your engine. A new Topic is in order.

Good luck. :)
