Mercury 115 inline 6 wont run after being shut down

I have a 1987 115 hp mercury inline 6. The motor cranks fine when you put it in the water. I can start it and run down the lake. If I shut it off for a minute it will restart fine. If i shut it off and fish for say an hour then restart it it will run about 3 seconds and then quit. It will take a few minutes to restart after a lot of cranking. The boat will then run fine again. It just started doing this and I have never had this problem until now. It seems like the longer it is shut off is when it starts, runs a couple of seconds then quits. It sounds like a leak. The fuel is leaking out or back into the tank. Have you checked the fuel pump and rebuilt it yet? Your floats could be leaking too.

If it initially starts fine it is because it is not flooded with gas and after you have sat for a bit I bet you are either getting gas into the engine while sitting or it is draining back...... remember with 3 carbs you have 3 suspects in the mystery plus the fuel pump.

The inlines are a bit temperamental and the last 115 I had would not start unless it was trimmed all the way down and tucked in tight to the transom.

When it sits awile do you prim the bulb and choke it again? Also, you can not flood these engines.

I don't choke it. I have never had to before it always just started right up. Do I need to start choking it if its sit for an hour or two?

YES....becuase of how cold these engines run when it site for an hour it's like you're starting it cold again.
