Mercury 115 plug wires

Recently bought a boat with a 1980 mercury 115 6 cyl. prevous owner had plug wires all crossed up as i found when i tried to start it (flooding, backfiring...). Do the wires run from the top coil to the top plug, second coil to second plug ect?

Yes they do. Sometimes they get moved around, along with the coil primary wires to isolate a bad coil. Be sure you check the primary wiring also, both at the coils and at the switchboxes. They're color coded, and maybe even labeled.

If it's that fuddled up, you better check link n sync, including timing before you start it. Would be a shame to grenade it first time out.
