On my 1993 Mercury 115 when the prop is spun in neutral you can hear a clicking noise like the gears are not disengaging I've removed the cable and the only way to get the gears to not make noise is to push tension on the shift lever toward the reverse postion there is not enough cable adjustment to keep the lever in this postion once the cable is mounted to the engine
any ideas?

Hi, Mikelf.

The clicking is normal cycling of an unengaged dog clutch. You will get the same effect if you put it in Forward and turn the prop backward, and vice-versa.

Good luck :)

You are correct, the gears are not disengaging. But this is normal. The engine must be running,(driveshaft turning), to kick-out the sun gear.
You can adjust the cable length, and also the travel to throttle,in the binickle control (must be removed i think)..

Are you acually having shift problems underway?

no shifting problems but I've noticed that you can hear this while the engine is idling in neutral. Boat is set up with twins and the other engine does not do this also the shift cable on the starboard side is midways of the adjustment and the port side (the one with the noise)is all the way to the end and needs to push the shifter slide another 1/2 inch to competely disengage the gears Maybe it's nothing to be concernd about just wondering if maybe something in the foot is wearing?
