Mercury 115hp 2+2 carb set up Help

hello gents

could you please help me, im new to the boat world but am quite handy with cars ect ect

i know a little about the 115 hp 2+2 carb situation i.e only running on 2 carbs then the other 2 over 1800 rpm but my engine wont tick over correctly and stalls when going into gear, my mechanic keeps saying that the idol screws are missing on the lower carbs but from what i read this is normal so im taking it into my own hands to fix.

i can see the upper idol screws in the carbs but my question is how many turns out should the screws be and whats the best way to set it all up ?
the engine also seems to smoke a little on start up.

any help would be most appriciated

I would run away from the mechanic that says the idle screws are missing !-------------Start with a compression test !

There are no jdle screws on the bottom carbs.Screws on top carbs are 1 1/8 turns out,adjust for best idle.These motors idle like crap anyway.
