I'm about to buy boat equipped with a 1987 merc 115hp outboard and was wondering if the engine is a good buy? Are there any issues with these engines? I suppose the fuel economy isn't especially good on an engine as old as this. Can I except to keep the engine for some years or is such an old engine likely to break down

some of us are still running engines from the 50's, it all depends on Maintenance! Past and present. Give more info on the unit and get more replies. mod# ser# etc. dirty? clean? salt water? been setting? etc.

Dan,

I have a 85 90HP (basically same engine)that I have had since day one. My brother has your model. Our only complaints are with the carbs. The floats which ride up and down on a pin tend to stick. Especially when you trim the engine all the way up. Gas begins to pour out of the throats.

Chuck

Daniso, I have a '86 115 Mariner which is about the same as your motor and I bought it new on my bass boat. This motor is almost 17 years old and the only thing I have done is replace the coils once and kept my maintenece up. You are right, they are a little hard on gas but reliable.
