I am looking for a new motor for my boat. I bought a boat last year with a Mercury 850(85hp).
Now I am needing to do some major repair on my motor because my reverse won't work and it is an expensive repair. My motor was made in 1963 so it is old and I dont know if it is worth it. THere are 2 boats in town where I live that are for sale. 1 has a Mercury 1150(115hp) these motors were made betwenn 1970 - 1978. the other boat has a Mercury 1250(125hp) but that engine was made in 1968-1969. The 1250 is atlease $1k more than the other, and I have not driven either boat. what would you do?

Re: Mercury 1250

There really isn't any way to know. You could buy one of those motors and have a whole lot more trouble than jus a L/U rebuild. They are old motors. Don't get me wrong, I like old motors, but you're taking a chance.

That being said,

You've got to find out how they were used and maintained. You have to do a compression check. You have to check for leaks in the lower unit. You have to make sure the cooling system works.

Don't buy anything without lake testing it first.

Be sure your motor isn't worth repairing. Check the compression on it too.
