Mercury 150 EFI - Blew Holes in Lower Unit

What happened here?? 1998 Mercury 150 EFI, started knocking at idle inside intercoastal and would stall when given throttle. Shut it down, went to start again and just appeared to lock up. Then I saw the two holes on either side of the lower unit. Just above the torpedo. See photos. Your thoughts would be appreciated. I plan on pulling off the lower unit and seeing if it will crank over, hoping the powerhead isn't trashed also.

Upper driveshaft bearing is the only thing in that area of the L/U. That's ugly.

SWAG: Lower unit low on oil and as UFM said upper bearing ran dry then siezed then started throwing parts. Makes sense that it would not want to start.
