It's a 1983. Check this link out and you can view all of it's components...

Good Motor! as long as the compression is good on all cylinders, the lower unit is in good shape and you have spark on all cylinders you should be happy with it.

Merc150

Re: Mercury 150 HP ?

You have the basic V6 150 Merc. based on the serial #. Not a Magnum, xr2, etc...
The link I gave you includes stuff that may be different from the basic model, so don't pay any attention to that stuff.

The compression is not as important as the consistency of the compression accross all of the cylinders... Meaning, no more than a 10% difference in one from any of the others... I would expect your readings will be anywhere from 115-130psi if the cylinders/pistons/head gasgets are in good shape.

Excellent,

Now check the lower unit oil for water intrusion. Make sure it looks like oil, not a chocolate milk shake....
Also check you prop shaft, make sure it isn't bent.
Spark...

Maybe you have done this already....

Re: Mercury 150 HP ?

I think I may have a carb problem. It's hard to start and when it does it seems to be loading up at idle!! Also me(185lbs) and one of my BIG friends(400 lbs) took the boat out today and it bogged real bad on take off!! Is this normal? Also with him in the boat with me, I couldn't get it much over 50mph at about 5800 Rpm!! One more thing I'm afraid to push it to WOT I've went a far as 6 grand with more peddle to go!! I think that 23 degree prop is wrong for my set up!!

Re: Mercury 150 HP ?

Is this boat new to you? How long is it?

Sounds like something is amiss. If as you say you are under propped, then your hole shot should be really good. Did you hammer it at takeoff, or ease into it. Were you trimmed out at 6,000 or tucked under, and were you tucked under when getting on plane?

Tucked under, ( trimmed down all the way).

I was tucked under on take off when it bogged and when we got on plain I trimmed out and it did fine! Now he got out of the boat to back the trailer in and I tryed it out to see the differance and it took off like a bullet and I was up to 55 Mph at 6000rpm( still not WOT) in less than 300 yards from the ramp!

Re: Mercury 150 HP ?

Smokey,
Props have a diameter and pitch. What diameter is your prop?

BTW: According to the manual the operating range of that motor is 5000 - 5500 rpm . Too much 6000 rpm and you willn't have to worry about your prop problem anymore

Re: Mercury 150 HP ?

What make, and how long is it. Buy listening to what you are saying, I would try a 14.25 four blade 25P Prop. It will help with the hole shot and get you down to an acceptable RPM, as Dingbat said, hold it down to 5,500 RPM.

For something you might want to put on your wish list, I put a set of Smart Tabs on my Bass Boat and would never ever take them off. Faster on plane time, and better all around performance.

Re: Mercury 150 HP ?

Hi Smokey
I do not advocate operating any mechanical devise above its recommneded limit; however, my experience with merc has been to let tham spin a little tighter than normal. If I had your set up I would look for a prop that would yield no more than 6000rpm...but again that would be me! The XR2's were rated for 6000 and they had the same 2.0 Liter block. Always make sure you use good gas and good oil.!
LW

Re: Mercury 150 HP ?

Update:: I got a four blade 24p 14inch dia. ss prop. It brought the rpms down some and the speed up some!! I got to about 57 mph at about 6000 rpms and let off of it, 1. because I was getting up to 6000 rpms and 2. because it started to wiggle a little bit in the tail!!Man the hole shot is something else,, Shoots out of the hole like a rocket!! It also helped with the handling some at higher speeds!! But I still can't get WOT without going over 6 grand !! I guess I still need to go up sum!!

Re: Mercury 150 HP ?

If you have a "wiggle" or chinewalking, you need to raise your engine up on the transom.. Do you have a jack plate? Go one hole up at a time and retest... This by the way will raise your rpms up some more... You wil probably end up with a 25 or 26 pitch prop by the time you are done...

Watch your water pressure!!!!
