Re: Mercury 150HP XR6 Rough Start
My 2001 Mercury 150 HP outboard (non-EFI) motor has been starting ok, but does not stay running. It stalls right after start-up and then has a bit of trouble re-starting. It feels as if it needs to be revved-up and cannot get enough gas. I need to use almost full throttle to get the engine running (in neutral). Once it gets going, it runs fine but it is very hesitant at start-up. It seems maybe like bad gas but I used up almost the whole tank and it is still doing the same thing. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Fuel pump, fuel filter, primer bulb and line, to name a few possibilities.
You could still have bad gas. If a little water gets into fuel with alcohol in it, they combine and phase out to the bottom of the tank, and it don't burn fer chit. New gas just adds more alcohol to the problem.
Pull the line off the engine and pump a few ounces into a fruit jar and look at it. It would be obvious.
I have a bass boat that gets swamped a bit by big boat wakes and takes on a burp of water into the fuel vent. Unless I want a piece of pipe sticking up out of the gunwale, it's going to happen. Fuel vapor check valve, and a big fuel/water seperator that's maintained solved all problems.
hope it helps
