So I just got a 16ft Jon Boat with a Mercury 15hp..I have only taken it on a small river and @ low speeds...Never had it wide open...today I took it on a different river where I was able to open it up for short runs...nothing to crazy..ran great..So then on the way back from taking this little run I stopped 2 or 3 times to chance the tilt on the motor to see what differences it would make...each time turning it off b4 pulling it up and changing the tilt...after the 3ed time it didn't want to idle...so I let it sit for a min took the cover off the top and and primed the motor and then restarted it...ran great till I put the cover back on then would not run/idle....so then I took the cover off so I could make it back to dock..thinking I might have fouled one or both of the plugs...so I stopped @ the parts house on the way home and got new plugs for the motor..went home installed them and run the motor in the tank @ the house..got the same results @ home...not sure whats going on now..I don't have a lot of info on the motor...it is a older Mercury 15hp 2 stroke with pull start only...not sure if that would help any of you tech guys... thanxs for any help or info on this matter...

Re: Mercury 15hp OB

Loose plug wire touching cover and being pushed out of place ??

Some low voltage wiring being pinched or dislocated by cover ??

Wire broke inside of insulation and being pushed around by cover ??

Fuel line being pinched by cover ??

First thing I would do is look carefully at what may be sticking out that the cover would touch. Is there insulation on the inside of the cover that may be wet, loose, and touching ignition wires when cover is on.

This sounds like a problem that is going to take more time than money to isolate. It is going to seem simple once you find out what it is.

The only thing you listed that I think it might be is some thing with the fuel..When I install the cover it dose not die right away..its all most like it might be lacking air...And Dies slow..
